Thangka

Thangka is a distinctive form of painting in Tibetan culture, with subjects spanning a wide range of areas including Tibetan history, politics, culture, and social life; most surviving thangkas are works of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon.

Traditionally, the pigments used were exclusively derived from precious minerals and gemstones—such as gold, silver, pearls, agate, coral, turquoise, malachite, and cinnabar—as well as plants like saffron, rhubarb, and indigo, to symbolize their sacred nature. These natural materials ensure that the colors of the painted thangkas are vivid and dazzling; even after hundreds of years, they remain bright and vibrant. As a result, thangkas are hailed as treasures of Chinese ethnic painting art, referred to as the “encyclopedia” of the Tibetan people, and recognized as an invaluable intangible cultural heritage within the folk art of the Chinese nation.

The creation of traditional thangkas involves rigorous requirements and an extremely complex process, which must be carried out in strict accordance with the rituals outlined in the scriptures and the instructions of the spiritual master. This includes a full set of craftsmanship procedures, such as pre-painting rituals, preparing the canvas, sketching the composition, applying pigments and dyes, outlining the design, applying gold and silver leaf, painting the eyes, and finally, sewing, mounting, and consecrating the thangka. The creation of a single thangka takes a considerable amount of time; at the shortest, it may take half a year to complete, while at the longest, it can take over a decade.
